What happens when you stop scrolling and start really noticing?

Join multimedia artist Alice Highet for a free series of creative workshops exploring Flass Vale through sound, photography, drawing, digital collage and creative reflection.

Together, we’ll explore the Vale through our senses — listening closely, looking differently and noticing the textures, sounds, movement, light and stories held within this familiar landscape.

Two Stages — One Creative Journey

Explore — Flass Vale

Our first two sessions will take place outdoors in Flass Vale, where we’ll walk, listen, observe and gather creative material from the landscape. Wednesday 21st October 10AM until 1PM

Create & collate — Redhills Miners Hall

We’ll then bring what we’ve gathered back to Redhills Miners Hall in Durham for two creative collation sessions. Here we’ll work with photographs, drawings, sounds and reflections to develop digital collages and shape the material into a collaborative film. Tuesday 3 November 10AM until 1PM

What will you take away?

  • New approaches to creative photography
  • Deep Listening techniques you can use in your own practice
  • Experimental sensory drawing methods
  • Your own digital artwork responding to Flass Vale
  • Practical experience using digital tools creatively
  • Simple creative mindfulness and attention practices
  • A chance to contribute to a collaborative film created from the workshops

No previous art, drawing or digital experience is needed. iPads will be provided, and support with the technology will be available from Digital Voice.

This is for anyone who is curious about creative practice, interested in exploring a familiar place in a new way, or simply wants to slow down, notice and make something.

FREE | PLACES ARE LIMITED

This programme is part of Wild Imagining, a PLACE Lab initiative inviting communities across Durham City and surrounding villages to reimagine their connection with local green spaces through art, culture, and collective creativity. From parks and river paths to allotments and natural landmarks, Wild Imagining is where creativity meets community, and shared ideas take root in the landscapes we call home.

This project is brought to you by Alice Highet, supported by a Cultivate Commission and Creativity Works. It is powered by Place Lab and funded by Into The Light and Arts Council England.
