STORMIN’ DURHAM’S CASTLES Launch event
Event Details
Durham is home to a remarkable collection of castles, historic buildings and stories that connect us to the Norman past. Stormin’ Durham’s Castles is a new National Lottery Heritage Fund-supported project bringing these stories to life and helping local communities discover, explore and celebrate Durham’s Norman heritage.
Over the coming year, the project will open the gates to some of Durham’s most important historic places and create opportunities for local people to get involved through talks, tours, creative activities, exhibitions, events, food, animation, re-enactments and community projects.
JOIN US TO LAUNCH THE PROJECT
The Stormin’ Durham’s Castles project officially launches at a special public lecture on 10 October, marking the beginning of a year of activity celebrating Durham’s Norman heritage as part of the European Year of the Normans 2027.
THE BAYEUX TAPESTRY AND ANGLO-SAXON MANUSCRIPT ART
Join Professor Emerita Gale Owen-Crocker, Professor Emerita of Anglo-Saxon Culture at the University of Manchester and author of the new book The Design of the Bayeux Tapestry, for a fascinating exploration of the relationship between the Bayeux Tapestry and Anglo-Saxon manuscript art.
The lecture will offer a chance to discover more about this extraordinary record of the Norman Conquest and explore the artistic traditions and influences behind its creation.
FREE & OPEN TO ALL
Thanks to National Lottery players, this special launch event is free to attend.
