A Wild Imagining with composer James Weeks
Join composer James Weeks for a special introductory session exploring creative responses to the natural sound world of Durham’s green spaces.
Sound is all around us. When we listen closely and attentively, it can become a rich source of imagination, creativity, and composition. James Weeks’ practice is rooted in deep environmental listening, transforming found sound into a wide range of creative outputs — from sonic landscapes and sound collages to collective vocal works and experimental sound environments.
This relaxed, stand-alone taster session invites you to experience his approach first-hand in the inspiring setting of Palace Green.
No previous musical training is required — this session is open to anyone with curiosity and a creative mindset. If you are a musician or work with sound, you are welcome to bring an instrument, though voice and listening will be central to the activity.
This is a free introductory event and an opportunity to explore, experiment, and see whether you would like to take part in the extended programme taking place later in the year.
This event is part of Wild Imagining, a PLACE Lab initiative inviting communities across Durham City and surrounding villages to reimagine their connection with local green spaces through art, culture, and collective creativity. From parks and river paths to allotments and natural landmarks, Wild Imagining is where creativity meets community, and shared ideas take root in the landscapes we call home.
Wild Imagining – Nature Soundings is powered by PLACE Lab and funded by Into The Light and Durham University.
