Event Details

Join us for a special evening exploring the secret world of bats through a hands-on, creative outdoor adventure.

On Thursday 14th May 2026, 6pm – 8pm, you’ll take part in a bat box making workshop, where you’ll design and build your very own bat box to take home. This workshop is designed for families and groups, with participants working together in small groups of two, three, or four to create a bat box. All materials and tools are provided—no experience needed, just curiosity and a bit of imagination. The workshop takes place at Redhills, Durham.

This free event will be led by designer-maker Nick James, who will guide you step by step through the making process.

As dusk falls, we’ll head out together for a guided bat walk at Flass Vale Nature Reserve, using bat detectors to tune into the hidden world of local bat species as they emerge into the night sky.

• Perfect for families, nature lovers, and curious beginners
• Work together in small groups to design and build a bat box
• Build and decorate your own bat box to take home
• Experience bats in the wild on a guided night walk
• Discover how design and nature can work together in surprising ways

Spaces are limited—book early to avoid missing out on this unique free event.

This Bat Box Workshop is a Wild Imagining…
where creativity takes flight, and even the smallest ideas might just find a place to roost.

Wild Imagining, a PLACE Lab initiative, invites communities across Durham City and surrounding villages to reimagine their connection with local green spaces through art, culture, and collective creativity. Rooted in parks, river paths, allotments, and natural landmarks, Wild Imagining is where creativity meets community, and where shared ideas take root in the landscapes, we call home.

Wild Imagining is powered by PLACE Lab and funded by Into The Light and Durham County Parks and Countryside Team.
